Watch “City of Galveston Drainage Vision 2025, Grants Bonds IDC Drainage Capital Improvement Program 2020 Update & Low Impact Development LID” on YouTube

Improving the island’s drainage is one of the City of Galveston’s highest priorities, and the city has developed long-term plans for extensive drainage solutions in addition to the progress already underway on numerous improvements. These projects serve to reduce flooding during rain events.

The Vision 2025 some of which are in grant applications not awarded detail existing storm sewer systems that would be replaced and upgraded using the City’s updated criteria that now require a 25-year storm drainage capacity. Additionally, the design if awarded will provide for at least one lane of emergency vehicle access in the event of a 25-year storm.

“Drainage is not something that gets fixed overnight. Projects of this type require a great deal of long-term planning both financially and from an engineering standpoint”.

The project improvement area if awarded includes an outfall pump station on the Galveston Ship Channel end of the proposed storm drain system located at Stategic locations.

Upon completion of these projects, the city will have the capacity to effectively control rainwater produced in a 100-year event within the city’s right-of-way and eliminate flooding of private property within the boundaries of the project improvement area. In addition, this project will significantly reduce flooding in project services area adjacent to the improvement area, prevent flooding on two main evacuation routes, provide critical access to community lifelines, and increase the City of Galveston’s resiliency to flooding from future events.

Good morning City Council. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to develop and share the Drainage Vision 2025 for the City of Galveston! First, I’d like to thank the City Council for their proactive leadership in drainage. Drainage investment in Galveston provides a far broader benefit than the City Limits itself. During Hurricane Harvey, the Galveston international airport kept the heart of Houston, Texas City and all others in this region alive, while Hobby and the International Airport were flooded. Therefore, drainage investment in Galveston provides a regional not just a local benefit.

Galveston has been through its major challenges but our proactive City Council turned these challenges into opportunities. After Hurricane Ike which devastated the City, the City started its rebuilding with the Ike recovery funds we received for repairing the damage to our infrastructure. Majority of these projects were in full motion in 2014.

Drainage infrastructure resiliency improvement started as a subsidiary to the Streets Ike Recovery projects and has advanced to its primary focus in the City today.

Our City Council has consistently shown a strong emphasis on Drainage Infrastructure Investment and has empowered City Staff to find innovative funding mechanisms such as City and County Bonds, IDC, CDBG, FEMA and TDEM Grants.

We’d also like to say a special thanks to our Citizens who approved the Bond Election of 2017 to improve our roads, water and sanitary sewer infrastructure. Drainage was a sub or minor component of these projects with the major drainage projects approaching final design and construction. So the improvement can be evaluated by our citizens after these projects have been built.

Our lessons learned during Ike Recovery and Bond projects implementations and the weathering of the numerous storms since Ike, has advanced our team to develop a 2025 drainage vision for the future Galveston’s unique challenges have advanced us to develop an unique 2025 Drainage Vision Plan.

In this presentation the focus will be on the vision, the solution, and its implementation. A model solution is in design right now, it has never been done before in the Houston-Galveston Region, and its implementation Island-wide could have far reaching Benefits to project Galveston’s leadership in Drainage Solutions.

Houston is only 3 times longer than Galveston but has a tax base that is 100 times the size of Galveston for the same length that it spans. This means we have to provide roads, drainage, water and sewer service for 1/3 the length of Houston with 1/100th the Tax base of Houston. So where does the funding come for drainage?

Let’s look at service fees. Looking at our fees for ROW construction drainage permits and drainage culvert installations these fees are a very small fraction of the cost of drainage permit and field installation service by our most efficient staff.

Environmental Uniqueness: Our terrain is flat, slow drainage, and bounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Bay. We are affected by high tides and storm surges and take the first hit from hurricanes and storms.

Our rainfall is high intensity short time span and our City so historical that you’ll never know what you find when a trench is opened to install drainage pipes even though we perform feasible investigations in advance.

Too often teams try to find solutions before understanding the problem and that leads to a path of failure. Galveston has been the graveyard for Contractors, Engineers and many others because they did not understand Galveston is unique and tried to implement a Houston, Austin or Boston solution for Galveston and failed. Solutions need to be realistic and cost effective providing the best return on investment for the community.

Nothing happens without funding. And to get funding and compete for funds with the entire US, we have to communicate to the Citizens and the Grant Agency that our solution provides the best return on investment. Providing that communication needs extensive research, conceptual design, modeling and presentation of a grant application to the funding agency, bond election, and addressing communities’ questions factually. Once we Secure the funding we are on the clock to implement the solution.

The D in drainage is not Do something. It represents Designing the effective, feasible and cost sensitive solution for the community. The I in drainage represents investment and E is the exit, our outfalls where drainage flows into the bay.

Challenge:

Pipe Clogs, High Tides, Marine Growth, Outfall Pipe Clogging-Cleaning the outfalls will be temporary & last only until next high tide.

Drainage on the island is not something anyone can fix in the next five years. We can make incremental progress by increasing drains and such but it all comes down to how it gets to the bay or the bayou and the tides at that time. Newer cities have retention and detention. Much like every City our age, Galveston was by design built to provide retention/detention within the street itself. We will continue to upsize the drains and now have a program to attempt to keep them free from tidal silt. Tidal slit can fill up to 50%-60% of some drains when we have high tides and this program has proven to help improve drainage when in place. Solutions beyond what we are doing would be in the billions of dollars and a burden that could not be sustained by local taxpayers. It will take federal intervention, like in New Orleans or New Jersey, to solve it completely and most likely with a coastal barrier of some type.

John 11:43-44 And when he thus had spoken, JESUS cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

MOVING FORWARD POWERED BY JESUS CHRIST!

When spiritually dead people give you feedback, ignore it When spiritually living people give you feedback respect it When God gives you feedback from the Bible, move forward, full speed!

Jer 7:24: But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

1.0 Who are we?

We often forget who we are and whose we are, when we face challenges that distract us, and attempt to erase the blessed memory of Christ with the Triune Almighty God living inside us;

Isa 43:1: But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

We are the sons and daughters of Almighty God, we are Hisproperty, He that toucheth us toucheth the apple of God’s eye, and we are elevated and placed just below God under His 24/7 oversight and watchful eye. No power or weapon has authority over us. We are mightier than the angels, placed above the saints in the Old Testament, because of the blood of Jesus and the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Everything, including all powers and authorities, Lucifer and his hosts are under our feet, as we operate under God, in the name of Jesus. Jesus at whose name everything will bow down, that same mighty Jesus the King of Kings now lives inside us, for we are the sons of God. Sons should sing songs to the brightest sun, the Son of God Jesus, and not chicken out when the see the enemy’s army marching towards us. We are the sons of God, who derive our authority from our heavenly Father, God. We are not just creation, we are above all creation and one with the Triune God.

2.0 The prayer of Jesus, the Son of God that elevated us:

Joh 17:21: That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Joh 1:12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Satan wanted to destroy the human race made in the image of God, but through His prayer and sacrifice, Jesus elevated us to His level and made us spiritually and literally and factually to be seated with Him in heavenly places on thrones right next to Him. The demons see that and tremble at both Christ and us God’s Children.

Eph 2:4: But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;). And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

3.0 We need to be a generation that moves forward not backward!

Some folks in the US want God out of the US Dollar and the national anthem so USA will run out of gas and the Spirit of God that is their only hope to save them from destruction and devastation. Six months before the 9-1-1 attack I was in prayer early in the morning from 1:30 AM to 6:00 AM and God took me in the spirit to Manhatten and made me hover over it at an altitude of about a 1,000 feet. He showed me the men and women rushing to work. As they were walking fast, he pointed to the women and said, “look at the manner of their dress and their sleeveless costumes. I will bring evil upon this nation from all directions, but you and your family will be protected. I pleaded with the Lord to have mercy on this country and the Lord told me to pray with tears, for Godly tears said He in the name of Jesus is USA’s only hope”.

Today we have a generation that trusts in their own strength (“I can handle it”) and moves backward, reckoning their strength is insufficient to overcome the challenges they see looming ahead on the horizon, and they are hesitant to move forward trusting in the Lord’s strength, Lord’s finance, Lord’s power, and Lord’s ability and talents. When their bank balance moves up they rejoice, when it ebbs down they are worried.

Our God is a God who moves forward and overcomes and fights for us. He wasn’t sitting in the Garden of Eden, regretting why Adam and Eve messed up?! He moved forward with a plan and sent Jesus to save the human race and defeated the devil in Christ’s weakness through the preaching of the cross. Following God’s example who faced greater challenges than we do on a daily basis, we should also trust in the Champion, our Almighty Victorious God and His everlasting strength and abundant provision moving forward with a supernatural thrust. Our bodies should have the sign, “POWERED BY GOD”. The beautiful creatures around God’s throne move forward, God moves forward, the universe and the galaxies are moving forward, the clock moves forward, what are we the sons and daughters of God waiting for, knowing we have the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead?

Eph 1:19: And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

4.0 Powered in forward motion, weak in backward slide!

Have you seen a flock of geese in the sky moving in a V-configuration, following their leader? The geese know that the victory configuration gives them the maximum forward thrust with the least effort. We have victory in Jesus Christ!

1Co 15:57: But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

God set eyes in the front of our head, feet pointing forward, arms with the ability to move 180 degrees forward with ease, and the inability to move 30 degrees backward with much resistance, so God can make it clear to us that he has designed us to move forward with ease and not backward with difficulty (I tried it this morning and it hurts to swing the arms backward!).

God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, yet He is somewhat limited by the power that worketh in us, because if we walk backward, we will lose power, and we will crash into a wall, but if we move forward we will see signs and wonders performed by the hand of Almighty God with whom all things are possible. The Bible says, God is limited by the power that worketh in us.

Eph 3:20: Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.

Why is there a limitation to His almighty power to operate in us? The limitation is not in the forward motion, but in the backward motion. When we move forward trusting in God against all odds, His power is unlimited to break barriers, however, on the same token, when we shift into reverse gear, we cannot move too fast, our horse power decreases from 250 to 0.1, similar to the limitation we observe in an automobile.

5.0 Obstacles disappear when we move forward If we move forward, as the sheep follows the Shepherd, we will see crooked roads straightened, gates of brass that blocked our progress broken, bars of iron cut in pieces and the breaker/almighty bulldozer going before us.

Psalm 23:1, John 10:4.

Psalms 23:1: The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Joh 10:4: And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

Isa 45:2-3: I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

Mic 2:12-13: I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men. The breaker (the bulldozer) is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them. The mountain will not move until we move forward. If we cannot obey God and have the courage to move forward, why should we expect the mountain to obey us and be removed from its place. God’s promises are conditional. He first wants us to trust His Word and move forward. He calls us kings and priests, sons and daughters of God, a little lower than himself, created in His own image, and He our Heavenly Father Himself is moving forward with our Savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit that dwells in us. We are the only creation in whom the Triune God dwells. If we are the Sons of God, the habitation and temple of the most high, the ark of the covenant that pushed the fierce Jordan river back to a heap, the greatest and highest and mightiest creation, placed just below God, even mightier than the angels who are our helpers to attain salvation, why do we hesitate to move forward when everything is subordinate and inferior to us and we are only subordinate to God who is our Father, our Heavenly Bridegroom, our Blessed Comforter and our Elder Brother?

6.0 Don’t be terrorized, have fellowship with Spirit filled Christians and move forward as a Heavenly Host, then you will see the enemy dead on the seashore, Ex 14:30!

Eze 1:9-22: Their wings were joined one to another (fellowship); they turned not when they went (focus on God’s throne); they went every one straight forward. And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit (God) was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went. And the likeness of their faces was the same faces which I saw by the river of Chebar, their appearances and themselves: they went every one straight (speaking God’s Word correctly) forward.

These are the creatures around God’s throne who run to and fro like lightening. His Cherubims and Seraphims move forward. Our God who is seated on His everlasting throne, is a God who always moves forward. His angels move forward. His army moves forward. Should not we his sons and daughters also move forward as the sons and daughters of almighty God, following in the footsteps of our heavenly
Father.

There is something supernatural that happens when the children of God move forward towards the looming mountains and the panoramic width of the ocean, and the widespread, terrible, and the threatening host of the enemy.

One notable thing about David, the little boy is he knew who His God was and always moved forward. He did not staggerwhen he saw a multitude of wicked people with a towering tall Big Foot resembling super evil champion leading them towards him. David saw God first and then when he looked at the giant, he felt he could crush him, since the giant was so small and miniscule in comparison to God. As David kept looking at God, the giant kept growing smaller. He knew who His God was and exploited the enemy with his faith in God.

Da:11:32: And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

1Sa:17:48: And it came to pass, when the Philistine (the Giant) arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David (the little kid) hasted, and ran toward the army tomeet the Philistine. David ran forward. He had aimed in the past at bears and lions at the same altitude. Now God wanted David to aim higher, although he was just a shepherd boy, not a soldier. But in one day David ascended to an altitude of an invincible warrior. He aimed before at animals at his level and elevation, now it was time to aim at a giant as tall as an elephant, at a much higher elevation. David accepted this challenge trusting in the everlasting God’s arms, that had perfect aim. The stone sank into the Giant’s head as directed by the hands of God who knew the giant’s anatomy and fragility. Yes, it was the attitude or altitude of David that struck the giant, and smote the Philistine, with a little boy’s power-packed faith arsenal. Our attitude or altitude towards the challenges we face will reveal our location and our coordinate longitudes and latitudes.

We worry about trifles and shoot butterflies with rifles, we waste much time arguing with fools and people don’t know the difference. We need to spend our time moving forward and overcoming the enemy in the name of Jesus, as the invincible warriors of God. David’s odds of killing the giant was 1 in a zillion, yet he did not flee in fear, since he was physically no match for the giant, but ran towards the giant in courage unarmed, unprotected externally, but protected by God’s mighty hand internally. 1 Sa 17:51: Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

Remember, there was an army around Goliath. How did David have the boldness to run to the Philistine, ignore the army that surrounded Goliath, and take Goliath’s own sword to slay him? It was his faith in God that paralyzed the enemy. David moved forward and his enemies moved backward. His faith was evident when he moved forward. Remember, the red sea parted when God’s children moved forward. No, they didn’t drown, it was their enemies that drowned. The Philistines saw Goliath was dead and fled. If we move forward, the enemy will sure enough flee.

Jas 4:7: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Psalms 27:3: Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

If we move forward praising the Lord and worshipping Him,we even don’t have to fight, for the enemy will be dead even before we finish our song. The gates will open even before we touch it.

Ac:12:10: When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

This chapter started with Herod killing one apostle, and arresting another, but ended with Herod’s death and the growth of God’s kingdom, as the church moved forward proclaiming God’s Word unhindered by kings and emperors who tried to stop their progress, inspired by Julius Ceasar. This stone will grow and become the greatest and an everlasting kingdom and will smite all others and ground them to powder

Ac:12:23: And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. Ac:12:24: But the word of God grew and multiplied.

7.0 Power in Praise

In fact there is so much power in us when we move forward with songs of praise, that the enemy’s host will be killed without a fight. It happened during the reign of a Godly King Jehoshaphat witnessed in the following Bible verses.

2 Ch 20:-24: It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.

In his family life, Isaac was almost about to lose his wife to wicked people, yet he trusted in the Lord in a foreign land, under a foreign wicked king.

Ge:26:13: And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great: He was a foreigner in the land, the people were trying to steal his wife, and in this unsafe environment, he trusted in the Lord, obeyed the Lord and dwelt in the land, went forward, and God exalted him. All the troubles (tests) in our life are to see if we move forward and run the race being overcomers or get overwhelmed by our obstacles and stop or move backward being defeated.

Abraham could have given up, but he didn’t. Ro 4:20: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory (praising) to God; We can either stagger at God’s promises because they are too good to be true or trust in the Lord who supplieth all our need miraculously against all odds and natural laws just like he multiplied the five loaves and two fishes and fed the multitude (5+2=10,000?!). It was lunch for one boy, but when it was brought to the Apostles, they brought it to Jesus, and Jesus multiplied it with his prayer and praise, to feed almost ten thousand people. Yes He turned water into wine, and when there was no boat He walked on the water, not during a quiet day, but during a stormy day, when it was hard to be still and maintain a balance. With God all things are possible! We can either sit looking at the mountain or the giant, or command the family to move forward because God told us to, and consequently, see the mountain removed and the giant crashing to the ground, dead as a stone, slain by the stone of faith. When our faith is solid as a stone, the gates of hell cannot prevail against it. There is a time to pray and a time to move forward. David lost his family to the enemy temporarily, but he prayed, got God’s counsel, moved forward, attacked the enemy, and got his family plus a great spoil.

1Sa:30:8-18: And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all. And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives. And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all. Moses was praying, God said, “Moses, Start Moving”! He did and the enemy perished, while they walked through the sea and reached the other side and the promised land, even as we today await the soon return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who will change our vile body that it might be fashioned according to His glorious body according the power that worketh in us Php 3:21.

Ex:14:15: And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:

Nu:10:35: And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.

Poem by Sharon:

This world tries to corner me,
Now I have my back against a wall,
As its struggles edge towards me,
I find escape more difficult.
Sometimes I feel like giving up,
And feel like giving in,
I can’t take the pressure,
Lord, it’s getting harder to stand.
What if it overtakes me?
What if I don’t make it through?
The walls are ready to cave,
But though I don’t know where else to move,
I know the time will come,
When You come to my rescue on that day,
And snatch me away from my troubles,
So at this moment as I wait…
I will look forward to the day,
When my troubles will pass away,
The moment I see Your face,
My night will turn into day.
Then the enemy will wonder,
Where I have possibly gone,
How did I escape his watchful gaze,
And jumped into Your loving arms?
In my weakness, God You are strong,
So the time I give up control,
My life will be in Your hands,
And You will never let me go.
Now as I wait for You to come,
Though things are still hard,
I trust you are protecting me,
That You will be my safeguard,
So I look forward to the day,
When my troubles will pass away,
The moment I see Your face,
My night will turn into day.
Then the enemy will wonder,
Where I have possibly gone,
How did I escape his watchful gaze,
And jumped into Your loving arms?

1. Reflexology:

Ill-health changes the anatomy and physiology of affected organs, some of which can be observed visually, elicited through physical examination or confirmed through biomedical analysis. Understanding how anatomical changes contribute to physiological signs and symptoms will help practitioners identify the pathology, appreciate its origin and development and justify prescribed interventions in a way which can be upheld by critical external scrutiny. Reflexology contributes to a holistic approach to care and has recently improved its credibility as a discipline which supports orthodox care. Several research publications have identified possible theories and principles for the mechanism of action of reflexology, but more research to explain its contribution in identifying ill-health and diseases, as well as appropriate treatment modalities, is needed. This health science works on the hypothesis that the dysfunctional states of body parts could be identified by observing certain skin features and be rectified by stimulating certain specific areas mapped on feet, hand and ears. Research has indicated that reflexology can lead to pain reduction, glycemic control, nerve conductivity, and thermal and vibration sensitivities. This class explores the anatomical and physiological basis of reflexology, its history, theory and hypothesis, and some of the theories for the mechanism of action. The class includes interactive body maps/charts, power points, videos, and class notes followed by a quiz with unlimited attempts to pass.

2. Trigger Point:

A “trigger point” (TrP) is a thick knot in a muscle that is palpable and tender (even painful to the touch). Trigger points can be caused by: training errors, inadequate preparation, worn shoes or equipment, poor biomechanics, muscle fatigue, poor flexibility, nutritional factors (vitamin deficiency), psychological factors (lack of sleep, stress). Trigger points are an early warning to a potential serious injury.

Painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system, including myofascial pain syndrome, constitute some of the most important chronic problems encountered. A myofascial trigger points is a hyperirritable spot, usually within a palpable tense taut band of skeletal muscle, which is painful on compression and can give rise to characteristic referred pain, motor dysfunction, and autonomic phenomena. Muscle is an orphan organ, no medical specialty claims muscle as its organ. Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) are widely accepted by clinicians and researchers as a primary source of regional neuromusculoskeletal pain. Each muscle has a characteristic elicited referred pain pattern that, for active MTrPs, is familiar to the patient. MTrP symptoms follow muscle overload, are activated acutely by sudden overload, or develop gradually with prolonged contractions or repetitive activity. Biopsies of MTrPs demonstrate segmental shortening of groups of sarcomeres in individual muscle fibres and possibly waves of contracted sarcomeres. This class explores the anatomical and physiological basis of trigger points, its history, theory and hypothesis, and some of the theories for the mechanism of action. The class includes interactive body maps/charts, power points, videos, and class notes followed by a quiz with unlimited attempts to pass.

3. Acupressure

Traditional Chinese Medicine has mapped out points of meridian pathways on the human body. These points, mapped out and proven by Western science using electrical devices, carry energy called chi. Some points relate to a specific body part, others are more general. The hypothesis is that when these points are stimulated by hand and finger massage, they encourage the body to combat illness. Basically the theory states, the many pressure points that exist along the meridians act as “valves” for the flow of qi. The ancient Chinese healing art of acupressure is similar to acupuncture, but instead of applying needles to certain points on the body, the technique uses finger pressure on these points. Like acupuncture, the theory is postulated that applying pressure “acupressure” on specific points of the body draws on the body’s natural abilities to cure itself. The pressure promotes blood flow, releases muscular tension and engages the body’s own life force to soothe and heal. Acupressure theory is further described as having the potential to relieve tension, aches and pains, arthritis, even menstrual cramps. It has also been postulated to help relieve the symptoms of insomnia, depression, toothache, dizziness, digestive disorders, nausea, morning, and motion sickness. Acupressure opens these valves to restore the flow of qi and balance the body’s natural energy. This class explores the anatomical and physiological basis of trigger points, its history, theory and hypothesis, and some of the theories for the mechanism of action. The class includes interactive body maps/charts, power points, videos, and class notes followed by a quiz with unlimited attempts to pass.

4. Lymphatics and Autonomous Lymphatic Drainage

Physiological benefits of therapeutic massage on the lymphatic system:

Assists the flow of lymph throughout the body, thereby assisting the immune system to prevent disease;
Aids in reducing edema (swelling);
In chronic inflammatory conditions in which fibrosis (scar tissue) is sure to advance if tissue fluid and lymph remain stagnant, massage is important in moving lymph and fluid.
What is lymph? Lymph is the clear colorless liquid that is between nearly all the cells of your body. It is the liquid seen with different kinds of swelling, such as a sprained ankle or often around the ankles in people with heart or kidney conditions. The lymph drainage system is a series of collecting tubes and filters (lymph nodes) that drain the lymph back into the blood vascular system. Your body depends on the lymph drainage system to remove proteins, waste products and toxins that collect between the cells of your tissues. Your body also depends on this system to trap and dispose of foreign matter, such as bacteria and viruses. When you have a swollen lymph node in your neck you know that the lymph drainage system is working to kill the bacteria or virus that is making you sick.

The Lymphatic System consists (1) of complex capillary networks which collect the lymph in the various organs and tissues; (2) of an elaborate system of collecting vessels which conduct the lymph from the capillaries to the large veins of the neck at the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins, where the lymph is poured into the blood stream; and (3) lymph glands or nodes which are interspaced in the pathways of the collecting vessels filtering the lymph as it passes through them and contributing lymphocytes to it. The lymphatic vessels are exceedingly delicate, and their coats are so transparent that the fluid they contain is readily seen through them. They are interrupted at intervals by constrictions, which give them a knotted or beaded appearance; these constrictions correspond to the situations of valves in their interior. Lymphatic vessels have been found in nearly every texture and organ of the body which contains bloodvessels. The lymph glands are small oval or bean-shaped bodies, situated in the course of lymphatic and lacteal vessels so that the lymph passes through them on their way to the blood. This class explores the anatomical and physiological details of lymphatics, mechanism of action, and the importance of natural lymph drainage. The class includes interactive body maps/charts, power points, videos, and class notes followed by a partially interactive quiz with unlimited attempts to pass.

5. Advanced Muscles and Movement

Muscle fibres are long, thin, tapered cylindrical cells full of the mechanisms required to convert chemical energy into movement. Fibers are arranged parallel to each other and usually lengthways. A sheath of collagen surrounds individual fibers. Bundles of fibers and the whole muscle are surrounded by more connective tissue. Blood vessels, motor neurons (the sort of nerve that innervates muscle fibers) and other nerves wind in between the bundles.

Muscle tissue has four main properties: Excitability (ability to respond to stimuli), Contractibility (ability to contract), Extensibility (ability of a muscle to be stretched without tearing) and Elasticity (ability to return to its normal shape).

Through contraction, the muscular system performs three important functions:

Motion – walking, running etc.
Heat production – maintain normal body temperature
Maintenance of posture – standing, sitting etc.
The muscular system is responsible for the movement of the human body. Attached to the bones of the skeletal system are about 700 named muscles that make up roughly half of a person’s body weight. Each of these muscles is a discrete organ constructed of skeletal muscle tissue, blood vessels, tendons, and nerves. Muscle tissue is also found inside of the heart, digestive organs, and blood vessels. In these organs, muscles serve to move substances throughout the body. This class explores the anatomical and physiology of the muscular system with interactive charts for muscle locations and muscle details. The class includes interactive body maps/charts with interactive muscle names and descriptions, power points, videos, and class notes followed by a quiz with unlimited attempts to pass.

6. Circulatory System

Physiological benefits of therapeutic massage on the circulatory system:

Stimulates circulation in the tissues involved and promotes substance exchange between the cells;
Aids in reducing the venous fluid back toward the heart;
Dilates bood vessels which can decrease blood pressure;
Causes contractions of the heart to be more forceful and complete;
Stimulates blood through the heart faster, thereby getting blood and nutrients to the cells faster;
Has a normalizing effect on the Autonomic Nervous System, which is beneficial to the heart;
Improves general circulation, as blood passes more rapidly through tissue being massaged.
When you get a massage, your circulation is improved due to physical manipulation of soft tissue and chemicals released as a part of your body’s response to relaxation.

To understand the benefits of massage, you first have to know a little about your circulatory system. Your circulatory system consists of two parts: the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems. These two systems work together to detoxify the body. As nutrient-rich blood travels away from your heart through capillaries, in adjacent tissue cells, nutrients and wastes are exchanged. Fluid taken from the blood, or lymph, transports waste to your lymph nodes where they filter wastes and return fluid to your bloodstream. When your circulatory systems isn’t working properly, your blood flow is impaired and your heart has to work extra hard to pump blood. This can cause health problems such as heart attack, stroke, eye disease, kidney disease, muscle pain, dementia, diabetes, influenza and cirrhosis, just to name a few.

Massage stimulates the flow of blood and lymph vessels, thus enhancing circulation. Think of a tube of toothpaste: when you apply pressure to the tube, toothpaste flows out of the tube more easily. The same principle applies to your blood and lymph flow when you get a massage. This class explores the anatomical and physiology of the circulatory system with interactive charts and details. The class includes interactive body maps/charts with interactive names and descriptions, power points, videos, and class notes followed by a fully guided interactive quiz with unlimited attempts to pass.

7. Integumentary (skin) System

Physiological benefits of therapeutic massage on the integumentary system:

Aids in vitality and elasticity of skin;
Aids in elimination of dead cells;
Send messages to the brain through sensory receptors in skin to aid in relaxation of entire body;
Through this system trust is established if healing is to take place both physically and psychologically.
The integumentary system is composed of different but related tissue groups that combine to form an organ system that covers and protects the body. This system is composed of skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands, and nerve endings, but in massage, our primary focus is on the skin. Skin is our contact with the physical world, the vehicle for sensations of touching and being touched. Skin protects the body—it is the body’s first defense. We even reflect our emotions through our skin, either by color, expression, or temperature. Massage is a way to keep the skin healthy, supple, and strong.

The skin receives tremendous benefit from massage. Massage helps to remove the top layer of dead cells, improving the condition of the skin and making it look and feel healthier. Circulation is improved, bringing a new supply of blood to the sebaceous glands. As the fresh blood circulates, the sebaceous glands produce more sebum to keep the skin soft and supple. Improved circulation also stimulates the sweat glands, allowing for the release of toxins. At the same time, the blood vessels expand, providing nutrients to the skin. Massage helps to release fatty tissue from the body as well as break up scar tissue.

This class explores the anatomical and physiology of the integumentary system with interactive charts and details. The class includes interactive body maps/charts with interactive names and descriptions, power points, videos, and class notes followed by a fully guided interactive quiz with unlimited attempts to pass.
